These services are the American Meteorological Service (NOAA/OPC), the Japanese (JMA) and the English (Metoffice). Also, the most modern techniques of safe course planning (weatherrouting) are taught with the aim of avoiding dangerous barometric systems and tropical cyclones. The seminar also makes special reference to waves (wind waves and swell).

Low that catches the eye...

A rare image is provided by satellite images from the morning of Saturday 8/11 as the “eye” created by the low swirling in Sicily, which also affects our country, is visible from space. The detached low is swirling in southern Sicily and was centered at dawn with a pressure of 997 mb. The creation of an eye in a low in the Mediterranean Sea, although it is not the first time it has happened, is not something common.

Seminar Description

The tropical cyclone seminar is a modern and comprehensive approach to the most dangerous meteorological phenomenon that a sailor can encounter. This seminar provides all the basic knowledge that the bridge officer must know, such as the structure of tropical cyclones, the name, the dangerous and navigable semicircle, the Rule 1-2-3. Special reference is also made to the way tropical cyclones are symbolized on surface maps, issued by the world's largest meteorological services (NOAA, JMA) and the way meteorological messages (advisories) are read is explained. At the same time, the method of Ma-Li Chen and Lee Chesneau for predicting the trajectory of tropical cyclones using the 500 mb map is taught for the first time in Greece. (more…)

Wind is perhaps the most important meteorological phenomenon that affects our activities at sea, as it is the wind that shapes the height of the waves and the general state of the sea. Atmospheric air can move in two ways either horizontally or vertically. By definition wind is the horizontal movement of atmospheric air. The vertical movements of atmospheric air are what shape the weather conditions in a region, so to speak. So the upward motion is what contributes to the creation of clouds and the opposite is the downward motion. In this article we will see in more detail the horizontal movement of atmospheric air.
