The seminar concerns professional sailors, sailors (professional or not), skippers, owners or operators of speedboats or people who are generally interested in meteorology and are active in the Greek Seas.

Seminar Overview

The Nautical Meteorology seminar for the Greek Seas is an innovative seminar in which participants learn practical knowledge about the weather at sea and beyond. Knowledge that is immediately applicable and will give them the necessary knowledge and confidence to deal with the complex weather that prevails in the Greek seas. This seminar not only covers theoretical knowledge but also gives practical examples and reveals to participants the secrets of safe weather forecasting. No mathematical or meteorological knowledge is required for participation, only basic internet browsing skills. The seminar, which began teaching in November 2011, has already been loved by the Greek Maritime community.

Desired knowledge

Upon completion of the seminar, participants will know:

  • how wind is created and why forecasts often differ from reality.
  • how wind interacts with the ground near coastal areas.
  • especially for sailors, what are the areas where we can take advantage of the topography to gain more wind?
  • How are meltemias created and how can I know when there will be a ban?
  • How can we predict rain?
  • What are the practical signs that warn us of a possible change in weather?
  • What are cold and warm fronts and what weather do they cause?
  • What types of weather are affecting our country and what season each type occurs.
  • How can we recognize storms before they break out and which season is the most dangerous?
  • What are Grib Files and how can we get free digital weather maps with a simple email?
  • which Internet sources to trust for forecasting and observing the weather in our country.

Seminar Contents

  • 1st-2nd hour - Wind: What forces cause it, how caves are created, how to read the wind maps available on various sites on the internet.
  • 3rd hour - The Aegean meltemi: How they are created, why they usually weaken at night, why they do not appear in the Ionian Sea, sea breeze
  • 4th hour-Fronts and barometric systems: What is a cold front, what is a warm front, what is a consolidation
  • 5th hour - Weather types in the Greek seas: What are the main weather systems that affect our country.
  • 6th hour-Weather maps: How to read weather maps for wind, rain and temperature, can I make a forecast myself?
  • 7th hour-Meteorological Station Network, Lightning Activity Monitoring Systems, Introduction to Grib Files
  • 8th hour-Working with the qtvlm application
