Seminar Overview

The webinar "Modern Marine Meteorology" is aimed at merchant marine bridge officers, shipping company executives and shipping professionals who wish to enhance their knowledge in practical weather analysis and safe voyage planning.

In the Modern Marine Meteorology Webinar, participants are trained in the basic principles of modern marine meteorology, with an emphasis on reading and interpreting surface meteorological charts issued daily by the major meteorological services, such as the American NOAA/OPC and the Japanese Meteorological Agency JMA.

Particular emphasis is placed on identifying dangerous barometric systems, understanding the evolution of ocean weather and linking meteorological information with practical route planning. Modern weather routing techniques are also presented, aiming to avoid dangerous areas, reduce fuel consumption, limit emissions and improve the environmental indicators of the ship.

Furthermore, the webinar delves into the practical use of popular weather forecasting and navigation tools, such as Windy, BVS and s-Planner, emphasizing their proper use by the professional mariner. At the same time, it presents how the ship should cooperate with weather companies, as well as how the mariner can strengthen his position in matters of accurate weather forecasting, safe navigation and informed decision-making.

Through real examples, practical applications and exercises, participants acquire the necessary foundations for the correct interpretation of all weather information they receive at sea, thus contributing to the avoidance of dangerous weather conditions and safer navigation.

The webinar, in its live format, was approved in July 2016 as a separate course, within the framework of the certification of DANAOS Assessment and Training Center as a Lloyd's Register Approved Training Center.

Desired knowledge

Upon completion of the webinar, participants will be able to:

  • read and interpret meteorological surface maps published by international meteorological services,
  • identify dangerous areas for safe navigation on a surface map,
  • accurately estimate the movement of a barometric low up to 72 hours ahead,
  • predict the movement of a tropical cyclone based on the official forecast advisory and calculate the minimum safe approach distance,
  • plan the safest route using meteorological maps and forecasts,
  • understand the significant wave height and its relationship to the maximum wave,
  • understand the basic principles of Weather Routing Optimization and the connection between weather routing, fuel consumption and environmental indicators,
  • choose the appropriate meteorological model when using Windy,
  • receive official meteorological maps in high resolution and clarity via email,
  • use GRIB files and basic tools for viewing digital meteorological data.
