Two-day Seminar on Nautical Meteorology

21 & 22 May 2016 – Thessaloniki

On Saturday and Sunday, May 21 & 22, the two-day seminar on Modern Marine Meteorology will be held in Thessaloniki. The seminar will be held at the hotel Golden Star City Resort, P. Kountouriotou 73, in Perea, Thessaloniki.

THE 1st day of the seminar is dedicated to how to read surface maps (facsimile) and wave charts. Through numerous examples and practical applications, participants learn not only to read the maps but also how to work with them, thus avoiding dangerous weather conditions and planning their course with safety and confidence. THE 2nd day is dedicated to the modern methods that exist to receive all official meteorological information on the ship via e-mail. Thus, all the modern methods are analyzed by which the sailor can access the weather forecast, wherever he is on the planet. At the same time, the usefulness of Grib Files is explained while free applications for your computer are also provided. During the 2nd day, participants work with their laptop. The thematic sections of the seminar are as follows:

1st Day (1000 – 1600)

  • Categories of Weather Maps
  • surface map analysis (facsimile)
  • analysis of wave height maps – significant wave height
  • safe travel planning
  • travel simulation with route planning and weather forecast.

2nd Day (1000 – 1500)

  • FTP Mail Service by NOAA

  • WWW via Internet
  • MailaSail
  • Zygrib & GribFiles
  • OpenCPN

Cost

The participation cost is 150€ while for students AEN is discounted 13% and the price is set at 130€. In case you want to attend one of the two days, the price is 100€. This price includes the course materials with printed notes, coffee breaks, a light lunch and a certificate of participation.

The presenter of the seminars is Dr. Nikos MazarakisDr. Nikos Mazarakis is Professor of Marine Meteorology and Associate Researcher at National Observatory of Athens. He has more than 5000 hours of teaching experience in the field of Marine Meteorology and in the past has collaborated with major Athenian newspapers, radio stations and television channels.
