Seminar Description

The tropical cyclone seminar is a modern and comprehensive approach to the most dangerous meteorological phenomenon that a sailor can encounter. This seminar provides all the basic knowledge that the bridge officer must know, such as the structure of tropical cyclones, the name, the dangerous and navigable semicircle, the Rule 1-2-3 rule and the revised danger zone. Special reference is also made to the way tropical cyclones are symbolized on surface maps, issued by the world's largest meteorological services (NOAA, JMA) and the way in which meteorological messages (advisories) are read is explained. And all this through practical applications, exercises and numerous examples. This particular seminar was selected by the HELMEPA for inclusion in its annual educational program for 2016, and was implemented on the 2nd day of the seminar entitled “Maritime Safety". This seminar not only covers theoretical knowledge but also gives practical examples and reveals to participants the secrets of safe weather forecasting. The two-day seminar will be held on Monday and Tuesday, February 26 & 27, 2018. In winter, if we sail in the Baltic Sea, the formation of sea ice can create serious safety issues for our sailing. It is therefore important to be informed from official sources about the ice cover and the quality of the ice. Finnish Meteorological Service Every autumn, it begins issuing ice charts every Monday and Thursday. However, when the ice cover expands significantly, the charts are issued on a daily basis. These charts depict the condition of the ice, the location of icebergs and restrictions on navigation due to ice.
