Seminar Description

The tropical cyclone seminar is a modern and comprehensive approach to the most dangerous meteorological phenomenon that a sailor can encounter. This seminar provides all the basic knowledge that the bridge officer must know, such as the structure of tropical cyclones, the name, the dangerous and navigable semicircle, the Rule 1-2-3. Special reference is also made to the way tropical cyclones are symbolized on surface maps, issued by the world's largest meteorological services (NOAA, JMA) and the way meteorological messages (advisories) are read is explained. At the same time, the method of Ma-Li Chen and Lee Chesneau for predicting the trajectory of tropical cyclones using the 500 mb map is taught for the first time in Greece.

Target Audience

The Nautical Meteorology seminar on Tropical Cyclones is aimed at bridge officers of ocean-going ships of any rank, students of the Hellenic Maritime Academy (AEN/KESEN), as well as office executives of shipping companies.

Seminar contents

Saffir – Simpson wind scale, nomenclature of tropical cyclones, formation of tropical cyclones, structure of tropical cyclones, seasons and trajectories of tropical cyclones, dangerous and navigable semicircle, rule 1-2-3, mapping tropical cyclones on meteorological surface maps and forecasting their trajectory, calculating the optimal course to avoid tropical cyclones, using e-mail to receive meteorological information and forecasts concerning tropical cyclones, Ma-Li Chen and Lee Chesneau method for forecasting the trajectory of tropical cyclones using the 500 mb map.

The seminar will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2014, time: 1000 – 1600, at 57 Kefallinias and Dodekanisou Streets, in Piraeus at the modern facilities of EIMFor the map of the area click here.

Cost

The participation cost is 120€, but for those who register by October 26, a discount of 17% is offered and the cost is 100€. For AEN/KESEN students regardless of the registration date, a discount of 30% is offered and the price is 84€. This price includes the monitoring material, coffee breaks and the certificate of participation.
