New Year's weather with questions and answers

• When does the weather change?

The weather will begin to change gradually from the evening of Tuesday 29/12, when the strengthening of the northerly winds in the Aegean will signal the arrival of very cold air masses from the Baltic region and Russia. Thus, from Wednesday 30/12 we forget the 16 and 18 degrees maximum and go to the normal levels for the season, that is, 6-13 degrees maximum temperatures from north to south.

 

• Will it snow in the lowlands?

Snowfall will be seen in the lowlands, mainly in Magnesia, Evia and Central Macedonia on Thursday and Friday. However, snowfall will generally be light. It will be denser in the Peloponnese from 500 meters and above.

 

• Will I need chains for national roads?

In Tempi, snowfall may cause a few problems on Thursday and Friday, while those traveling on the Corinth-Tripoli road will also see snowfall, but without major tensions. In Epirus, the weather will generally remain good, but on New Year's Day, mainly from noon onwards, heavy snowfall will be noted.

 

• Will it snow in Athens?

According to the forecast data up to noon on Monday 28/12, snowfall will also occur in Attica. However, the phenomena will generally be light. The snowfall will affect the mountainous and northern suburbs without, however, their intensity creating any particular problem. More severe snowfalls, not only in the mountainous areas of Attica but in most mountainous areas of the mainland, are expected on the second day of the year, as the shift of winds to southeasterly will cause a rise in temperature but at the same time an enrichment of the atmosphere in humidity. This means more abundant snowfalls but at higher altitudes.

• Will there be enough snow at the ski resorts?

The news is good for the ski resorts as the ideal conditions for heavy snowfall appear to be in place from Saturday onwards. That is, southerly winds with low temperatures, which means high humidity levels and heavy snowfall at higher altitudes.
