Useful PDFs to download maps on the ship

Pacific surface analysis

The very good fellow American David Burch has created two extremely useful pdfs where you can download all the analysis and forecast maps from the US Weather Service with the click of a single button. This can be done either directly from the internet or via SaildocsYou can read information about the Saildocs service here. here.

For the Atlantic archive click here.

For the Pacific archive click here.

In our two-day seminar entitled Modern Marine Meteorology which will start next September, we learn exactly how to read maps and how we can receive them on the ship with amazing resolution, without the use of facsimile.

Automatic receipt of tropical cyclone warnings in our email

CeliaTropical Cyclone Celia from the Bon Voyage System 7 program

On the second day of the seminar Modern Nautical Meteorology we have explained in detail how to use the excellent service Saildocs we can get the grib files and the official maps.

But what should we write in case we want to receive the latest advisory from the National Hurricane Center for a tropical cyclone in the North Atlantic, Northeast Pacific, and North Central Pacific?

Very simply, we send the following in the main body of our email:

send met.xx (where xx = the MetArea code number of the area we are interested in. For the Northeast Pacific it is xx=12)

send epac.tech_advisx (where x is the number of the tropical depression. For example, if we write advise4, we will be sent the official advisory from the National Hurricane Center for Tropical Cyclone Celia, which was swirling in the Northeast Pacific on 12/7/2016)

send epac.discx (where x see the last description. With this command we get the latest discussion from the National Hurricane Center).

However, if you do not know the number of the tropical depression, you can much more easily make an annual subscription and be sure that you will never miss a single advisory!!

If you would like to subscribe to the service for one year for free, then send the following message to Saildocs (i.e. to the email query@saildocs.com, without a subject and without signatures in our email) for the Atlantic:

sub atl.tech_advis1 interval=1 days=365
sub atl.tech_advis2 interval=1 days=365
sub atl.tech_advis3 interval=1 days=365
sub atl.tech_advis4 interval=1 days=365
sub atl.tech_advis5 interval=1 days=365
and for the Pacific:

sub epac.tech_advis1 interval=1 days=365

sub epac.tech_advis2 interval=1 days=365

sub epac.tech_advis3 interval=1 days=365
sub epac.tech_advis4 interval=1 days=365
sub epac.tech_advis5 interval=1 days=365
