Webinar Description

The webinar on tropical cyclones is a modern and comprehensive approach to the most dangerous meteorological phenomenon that a sailor can face. This webinar provides all the basic knowledge that the bridge officer needs to know, such as the structure of tropical cyclones, the name, the dangerous and navigable semicircle, the Rule 1-2-3 rule and the revised danger zone. Special reference is also made to the way tropical cyclones are symbolized on surface maps, issued by the world's largest meteorological services (NOAA, JMA) and the way meteorological messages (advisories) are read is explained. And all this through practical applications, exercises and numerous examples. This particular seminar was selected by the HELMEPA for inclusion in its annual educational program for 2016, and was implemented on the 2nd day of the seminar entitled “Maritime Safety". 

Target Audience

The Nautical Meteorology webinar on Tropical Cyclones is aimed at ocean-going ship bridge officers of any rank, AEN students as well as shipping company office executives.

Saffir – Simpson wind scale, nomenclature of tropical cyclones, formation of tropical cyclones, structure of tropical cyclones, seasons and trajectories of tropical cyclones, dangerous and navigable semicircle, rule 1-2-3, danger zone, plotting tropical cyclones on meteorological surface maps and forecasting their trajectory, calculating the optimal course to avoid tropical cyclones, using e-mail to receive meteorological information and forecasts concerning tropical cyclones.

The seminar will be conducted using the educational platform ZoomAfter you register, you will be sent a link and detailed instructions to connect and watch the webinar. The course is interactive. This means that the participants are actively involved, expressing their questions but also participating in solving exercises with maps and weather programs.

The presenter of the seminars is Dr. Nikos MazarakisDr. Nikos Mazarakis is Professor of Marine Meteorology, Visiting Professor at Uninettuno University/Institute for International Maritime Studies, Lecturer at KEDIVIM University of Western Macedonia and Director of the Greek Office of the weather company STORMGEO. At the same time, he collaborates as a research associate at National Observatory of Athens. He has more than 5500 hours of teaching experience in the field of Marine Meteorology, while in the past he has collaborated with major Athenian newspapers, radio and television stations.
